Innocence

.... and when I switched the T.V. on , I saw fields, meadows and trees. There were people travelling in open horse and carriages. They were talking . One was saying " and he was a bit of lad " and the young boy who was also sitting there said " But how could that be. He is a fully grown man."

Nobody answers him . He was left to work it out for himself. There was something familiar about the theme music ..... and then I realised . This was a film , " The Go-Between" !

The young boy unwittingly becomes the messenger for two lovers. When he realises he is somehow being used , he wants to know the full adult story . he wants to know what " spooning " is . He keeps getting hints , but no clear answers. The adults have their own language and ways and use this skill to trick him and take advantage of his innocence.

Nostalgia. I saw this film in my teens, I think. I was naiive too. I didn't understand too well what it was about. I didn't understand about relationships and why people did what they did. I must have been somewhere else . I too was left to work things out for myself. The story of my life !

I remember the contrast of scenes , when the film switches from a really hot summer's day in England at the turn of the century with temperatures soaring and tipping 30C and then over to a cool, cloudy, rainy, present day with cars and umberellas .

Beautiful countryside, clothes, a magnificent old sprawling house and garden full of flowers. Places to explore. A long hot summer. Still the young boy was so alone in this world. Alone with his feelings , sensitivity , shyness and his unanswered questions. Do I recognise myself ? Maybe .

Dear Emmie,

I would never underestimate that boy, he may be wiser than many in the world of adults.

Age is only another way of making people easier for ourselves to understand, but the truth is, no one can tell really, how old other people really are.

It is just a small count in a countless world.

I agree , Rami
It is a místake to underestimate the innocence.

There is great creativity in innocence.

Thanks !
